- Ghrelin is a circulating growth-hormone-releasing peptide. Ghrelin is derived from the stomach and stimulates food intake. Ghrelin is synthesized as a preprohormone, then proteolytically processed to yield a 28-amino acid peptide. Ghrelin is important in long-term control of food intake and body weight, circulating ghrelin at fasting concentrations may stimulate food intake.
