    Background
Osteoglycin (OGN, a.k.a. mimecan) belongs to cluster III of the small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRP) of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In vertebrates OGN is a characteristic ECM protein of bone. The function of OGN has mainly been studied in mammals in which it regulates collagen fibrillogenesis, the efficiency of which is increased when it is processed by BMP-1/Tolloid-like metalloproteinases. OGN has a role in wound healing in the cornea, in ath erosclerotic lesions and modulates myocardial integrity and remodelling. In addition, OGN enhances the neurite outgrowth promoted by insulin-like growth factor-2 and IGF binding protein-2.
