- Background
- Profilin-1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PFN1 gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a ubiquitous actin monomer-binding protein belonging to the profilin family. At high concentrations, Profilin-1 prevents the polymerization of actin, whereas it enhances it at low concentrations. This gene is a 140-amino acid protein and major growth regulator of filamentous (F)-actin through its binding of monomeric (G)-actin. It is thought to regulate actin polymerization in response to extracellular signals. Deletion of this gene is associated with Miller-Dieker syndrome.
