Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a oligosaccharide glycopeptide hormone (244 aa) produced in pregnancy that is made by the embryo soon after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast (part of the placenta). Its role is to prevent the disintegration of the corpus luteum of the ovary and thereby maintain progesterone production that is critical for a pregnancy in humans. hCG may have additional functions, for instance, it is thought that hCG affects the immune tolerance of the pregnancy. Early pregnancy testing, in general, is based on the detection or measurement of hCG. HCG is compose of two non-identical, non-covalently linked polypeptide chains as α and β-subunits. The α subunit of hCG is nearly identical to that of thyroid stimulating (TSH), FSH, and LH.A germ cell tumor which is + for Cytokeratin, PLAP, and hCG but negative for EMA and alpha feto protein is probably choriocarcinomaSynonyms: CGB, CGB3, Choriogonadotropin subunit beta, beta hCG, hCG-beta
