Mutations in the polycystin 2 gene are thought to be involved in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, a condition characterised by renal cyst formation. Polycystin 2 has multiple membrane spanning domains with C and N terminal cytoplasmic domains, and has been found to be localised to the plasma membrane, ER and Golgi in various cell types and in cilia. It is thought to be involved in calcium signaling and transport and has been implicated in the development and morphology of renal tubules. It has been found to be regulated by EGF signalling. Interaction with polycystin 1 via the C terminus of both proteins is thought to be important for its function.Synonyms: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease type II protein, Polycystic kidney disease 2 protein, Polycystin-2, Polycystwin, R48321
