BMP-6, VGR-1
Description: This gene encodes a secreted ligand of the TGF-beta (transforming growth factor-beta) superfamily of proteins. Ligands of this family bind various TGF-beta receptors leading to recruitment and activation of SMAD family transcription factors that regulate gene expression. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate each subunit of the disulfide-linked homodimer. This protein regulates a wide range of biological processes including iron homeostasis, fat and bone development, and ovulation. Mice lacking this gene exhibit delayed ossification of the sternum, iron overload, and reduced fertility in females. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2016] - Molecular Weight
- predicted molecular mass of 54.9 kDa after removal of the signal peptide. The apparent molecular mass of mBMP6-His is 35-70 kDa due to glycosylation.
