    Background
INSR is an insulin receptor type protein kinase. Binding of insulin to INSR stimulates glucose uptake. Two insulin receptor mRNA transcripts resulting from alternative splicing of exon 11 in the receptor gene are expressed in a highly regulated tissue-specific fashion. Mutations in the INSR gene contribute to diseases, including of various forms of insulin resistance, insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus, noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome and Leprechaunism (Donohue Syndrome).Synonyms: Insulin Receptor
