    Background
Three major forms of IkappaB-like molecules have been identified and each is characterized by multiple copies of ankyrin repeats. IkappaB-alpha and IkappaB-beta appear to be the major regulatory forms of IkappaB in most cells. These proteins interact with p65 or c-Rel containing forms of NFkappaB and block nuclear import by masking the nuclear localization sequences of NFkappaB. The activation of NFkB involves the inducible phosphorylation and subsequent degradation of IkappaB. Immunoblotting easily detects the hyper-phosphorylated forms of IkappaB-alpha, but not phosphorylated IkappaB-beta.Synonyms: I-kappa-B-beta, IkB-B, IkB-beta, IkappaBbeta, NF-kappa-B inhibitor beta, TR-interacting protein 9, TRIP9, Thyroid receptor-interacting protein 9
