Purpose: ERβ is a protein encoded by the ESR2 gene which is approximately 59,2 kDa. ERβ is localised to the nucleus. It is involved in gene expression, the nuclear receptor transcription pathway, development endothelin-1/EDNRA signalling and the prolactin signalling pathway. This protein falls under the family of oestrogen receptors. It binds oestrogens and activates expression of reporter genes containing oestrogen response elements in an oestrogen-dependent manner. Oestrogen controls many cellular processes including growth, differentiation and function of the reproductive system. Oestrogen is also responsible for the growth and maintenance of the skeleton and the normal function of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. ERβ isoform 1 is expressed in testis and ovaries while isoform 2 is expressed in spleen, thymus, testis and ovaries. Mutations in the ESR2 gene may result in medullary thyroid carcinoma and de quervain disease. STJ93002 was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This polyclonal antibody detects endogenous levels of ERβ protein.

Comment:

Isoform 1 is expressed in testis and ovary, and at a lower level in heart, brain, placenta, liver, skeletal muscle, spleen, thymus, prostate, colon, bone marrow, mammary gland and uterus. Also found in uterine bone, breast, and ovarian tumor cell lines, but not in colon and liver tumors. Isoform 2 is expressed in spleen, thymus, testis and ovary and at a lower level in skeletal muscle, prostate, colon, small intestine, leukocytes, bone marrow, mammary gland and uterus. Isoform 4 is found in testis. Isoform 5 is expressed in testis, and at a lower level in spleen, thymus, ovary, mammary gland and uterus. Isoform 6 is expressed in testis, placenta, skeletal muscle, spleen and leukocytes, and at a lower level in heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, thymus, prostate, colon, small intestine, bone marrow, mammary gland and uterus. Not expressed in brain.
