- Background
-
Myelin-associated glycoprotein is also known as Siglec-4a, MAG and GMA,is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and SIGLEC (sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin) family. MAG is a single-pass type I membrane protein and contains four Ig-like C2-type (immunoglobulin-like) domains and one Ig-like V-type (immunoglobulin-like) domain. MAG is a adhesion molecule in postnatal neural development that mediates sialic-acid dependent cell-cell interactions between neuronal and myelinating cells. MAG is a functional ligand of the NOGO-66 receptor. MAG is thought be involved in myelination during nerve regeneration.
