Hepatocytes
Hepatocytes are the major parenchymal cells in the liver and make up approximately 80% of the organ’s mass. They fulfill essential roles in metabolism, storage, detoxification and drug metabolism, protein synthesis, bile production, and in the innate response against invading microorganisms. Various cell markers are commonly used for immunophenotyping of hepatocytes to distinguish them from other cell types in the liver.
